25 June, 2005
Kota Kinabalu: Determination, hard work and self-discipline paid off for the drama team of SM Sung Siew Sandakan when they won the English Drama Competition for Zone D (Sabah, Sarawak and FT Labuan).
The second and third places went to SMK Batu Lintang from Sarawak and SMK Lajau of Labuan.
Happiness was clearly written on their faces as the name of their school, SM Sung Siew, was announced as the winner of the competition. They received a trophy and certificates from the sector head of the management resource development unit, Mohd Ukong Lisong, who represented the Deputy Director of Education, Normah Gagoh.
The contest was important for the team as the winner of the competition will be representing Zone D at the national level event later.
One of the teachers who chaperoned them, Latifah Binti Yusof Embun, told Daily Express that the drama team deserved the trophy and the honour to represent Zone D at national level because they really worked hard for four months.(huh!! ko pikir kami nda kerja keras kah BUDUH)
"It took us about four months of practice every day regardless of exams or school holidays.
"The team practised after school, every afternoon and even during exams.(eleh kami masa belajar pun blatih, nda jgak kami bising) They even sacrificed their school holidays to practise the play.(temberang kami siang malam blatih menambir sja ko tau bah)
"That is why we are very happy with the achievement," she emphasised. Latifah, who is also the teacher who trained the team, said the title of the drama 'Bang Bang You're Dead' was actually found by the director of the drama, Tricia Chung, 14, who surfed the Internet and encountered a famous script by American playwright, William Mastrosimone.Eleh kami original jgak cita kami nda jgak kami cek di internet cari cta baru
She said the drama related a real tragic shooting of students in America on April 20, 1999. Called Columbine massacre, two students shot dead 13 others and wounded 21 before turning the guns on themselves.
"The drama showcased the reason why it happened and what pushed the boy who actually did all the shootings.
"It has been shown in many plays throughout the world to create and raise awareness on school violence and bullying in school," she said. eleh nda original pnya cita
On the team's confidence in winning at the national level competition, Latifah replied that winning is not their target but to get the message out nationwide especially about the dangers and consequences of school violence and bullying.
